Introduction
Questions based on Spelling Test are usually of two types. In the first type, four words are given in each question out of which only one word is correctly spelt. You have to find the correctly spelt word. In the questions of second type, four words are given in each question out of which only one word is wrongly spelt. You have to find the wrongly spelt or misspelt word.
The act or process of forming words correctly from individual letters is called spelling. It is the actual way in which a word is spelt.
Brisk Tips
- Read and learn the spelling rules given in this chapter.
- Learn and practise the commonly misspelt words by writing thens down
- Keep an eye on the exceptions as well.
- The correct pronunciation of a word also helps you to spell it correctly.
Final Consonant
One-syllable words ending in single vowel + single consonant double the consonant before a suffix beginning with a vowel.
example
- beg + ed = begged
- big + er = bigger
- swim + ing = swimming
- sad + est = saddest
Words of two or three syllables ending in single vowel + single consonant double the final consonant if the last syllable is stressed.
example
- permit + ed = permitted
- occur + ing = occurring
- control+ er = controller
- begin + ing = beginning
Consonant ‘l’ is doubled in the words ending in singlevowel + l before a suffix beginning with a vowel.
example
- signal + ing = signalling
- repel + ent = repellent
- quarrel + ed = quarrelled
- travel + er = traveller
When the suffix ‘full’ is added to a word, one T is removed..
example
- faith + full = faithful
- use + full = useful
If the word to which the suffix full is added ends in ‘ill’ one ‘l’ is removed from the word also.
example
- skill + full = skIlful
- will + full = wilful
Final ‘e’
Words ending in silent ‘e’, drop the ‘e’ before a suffix beginning with a vowel.
example
- hope + ing = hoping
- live + ed = lived
- drive + er = driver
- tire + ¡ng = tiring
If the suffix begins with a consonant, ‘e’ is not dropped
example
- (i) hope + full = hopeful
- (ii) sincere + ly = sincerely
But,
- true + lv = truly
- nine + th = ninth
- argue + ment = argument
When the suffix ‘ous’ is added to a word ending in ‘ce’, ‘e’ is changed to ‘i’.
example
- space + ous = spacious
- vice + ous vicious
- malice + ous = malicious
- grace + ous = gracious
Words ending in ‘ee’, do not drop an ‘e’ before a suffix.
example
- see + ing = seeing
- agree + ment = agreement
- foresee + ing = foreseeing
- agree + ed = agreed
When the suffix ‘ing’ is added to a word ending in ‘ie’, ‘ie’ is changed to ‘y’.
example
- lie + ing = lying
- die + ing = dying
- tie + ing = tying
Final ‘y’
A final ‘y’ Following a consonant changes to ‘i’ before a suffix except ‘ing’
example
- carry + ed = carried
- happy + ly = happily
- marry + age = marriage
- beauty + full = beautiful
But,
- marry + ing = marrying
- carry + ing = carrying
A final ‘y’ following a vowel does not change before a suffix.
- obey + ed = obeyed
- play + er = player
- pray + ed = prayed
‘ie’ or ‘ei’
In a word, ‘ei’ is generally used after ‘c’ and ‘ie’ is used after any other letter.

conceive – achieve
conceit – relieve
deceive – believe
receive – field
‘But,
seize – protein
counterfeit – weird
surfeit
