In this chapter we deal with typical relationship between the numbers and alphabets. The question asked from this chapter generally based on a particular-relationship between the numbers and alphabets also. The relationship among the question which are asked can be considered with alphabetical order and may be considered on the basis of mathematical operations.
By analysing the trends of exams can say that symbolic (alphabet) and number analogy play a vital role to interpret and to check the ability of a candidate to consider the relationship between the given question and to choose the best solution.
Symbolic/Number Analogy
Symbolic and number analogy test is a procedure to check the knowledge of a student with reference to number system and alphabetic series.
Concepts of Symbolic/Number Analogy
Rule I Basic rule
Through, this operation/rule. We can say that here 1 is related to 2, in same manner 2 is related to 1 and as 3 is related to 4, in same manner 4 is related to 3.
Rule II Develop rule
Through, this Operation/rule. We can say that here 1 is related to 3, in same manner 3 is related to 1 and as 2 is related to 4, in same manner 4 is related to 2.
Number Analogy
In number analogy, numbers are given in pair or group and the candidate has to find the relationship between the numbers or group of numbers.
The relationship is number analogy can be of following types
- Total number of digits
- Even and odd numbers
- Square and square roots of digits
- Cube and cube roots of digits
- Multiplication and division of numbers
Example: Choose the correct alternative, which represent the same relationship as first two bears.
957 : 735 : : 833 : ?
(a) 338 (b) 383 (c) 611 (d) 683
Answer: (c) As, 9-2 = 7 5-2 = 3 7-2 = 5
Similarly, 8-2 = 6 3-2 = 1 3-2 = 1
So, 611 is the correct answer.
Alphabet Analogy
Alphabet analogy contains the relationship between the letters or group of letters. The candidate has to remember the position of letters in English alphabetical order and find out the relationship between the given letters or group of letters.
The relationship between the letters are of following types
- Increment or decrement in position of letters
- Reverse order of position
- Vowel or consonant
Before dealing with the problems, candidates are advised to remember the following.
Example: What should come is place of question mark (?)?
