Word formation is a technique of making a new meaningful word using the letters of given word. In word formation a letter is used only once to form a new word from the letters of given word.
In examination a main word is given and students are asked to make another meaningful word, using the letters of given word.
The motive of asking these questions is to test the ability of a candidate in word formation process.
In this topic we will deal with two types of question.
1. Word Formation of Given Word In this type of questions, some questions are asked frequently.
(i) A word which can or cannot be formed.
(ii) Form as many meaningful English word as possible.
(iii) A word which can be formed by 1st, 3rd, 5th (and so on) letters of the given word.
Example From the given alternatives, select the word which cannot be formed using the letters of the given word? SSC (10 + 2) 2011
PSYCHOLOGY
(a) SCHOOL
(b) GOOD
(c) POOL
(d) HOLY
Answer:
(b) ‘GOOD’ cannot be formed by the letters of the given word ‘PSYCHOLOGY’ because the letter ‘D’ is not present in ‘PSYCHOLOGY’.
Example From the given alternatives, select the word which cannot be formed using the letters of the given word. SSC (10 + 2) 2011
HISTORICAL
(a) RICHES
(b) CHARIOT
(c) CHART
(d) CHAOS
Answer:
(a) ‘RICHES’ word cannot be formed by using the given word ‘HISTORICAL’ because ‘E’ letter is not present in the given word.
2. Word Formation of Unscrambled Letters In this type of questions, a set of English letters is given in a jumbled order, the candidate is required to arrange these letters to form a meaningful word.
Example A group of alphabets are given with each being assigned a number. These have to be unscrambled into a meaningful Word and correct order of letters may be indicated from the given responses. SSC (10+2) 2010
